SEO Isn’t The *Only* Reason Your Business Needs a Blog

🔥 HOT TAKE: SEO is not the most important reason that you should have a blog in your business.

If you’re familiar with the online world or you follow people that are in the content and marketing industry, you’ve likely heard them say that blogs are important for SEO - search engine optimization.

All that really means is that you have optimized content on your website that relates to what people are searching for when it comes to your niche, so that you increase your visibility when people search on Google.

The philosophy behind this is that the more optimized content your website has, the higher up you’ll appear in a Google search and one of the best ways to have more content on your website is through blog posts.

While this philosophy can be totally true and I absolutely want you to rank higher in a Google search, what I believe is even more important and will produce a much greater return for you is that your blog is optimized for PEOPLE, not a search engine.

Did you know that 47% of people consume 3-5 pieces of content before purchasing from you?

This means that however they find you, whether that be through Instagram, TikTok, your podcast, email or they stumble upon your website, a majority of people will continue to do some digging before they take the next step.

Now of course some people are quick buyers and they don’t need as much information as others, but you want to make sure that your content is produced and organized in a way that is convenient for that 47%.

You see there are people who are currently following you that haven’t purchased from you and the reason that might be is because they haven’t been able to find those 3-5 pieces of content they need to feel confident about taking that next action.

But you might be thinking that you already have that content for people - it’s clearly on your social media… right?!

And I get it - as a business owner, you’ve likely been trained to treat social media as your main resource for content and while I agree that social media is a very important tool when it comes to your business, it also can become extremely overwhelming and confusing for your audience.

Think about it ⬇️

Let’s say you post 3 times per day:

  1. One trending reel

  2. One static image

  3. One client testimonial

And let’s say that you follow this posting schedule for months on end.

Overtime, sure you might start to have a pretty, cohesive feed that YOU love, but is it the most valuable for the person that just followed you?

Are they able to find content that clearly conveys your message? Is it organized in a way that existing followers can easily find the valuable piece of content you posted 3 months ago?

Chances are it’s not, no matter how hard you try, and this isn’t your fault - this is simply the nature of social media. Instagram feeds aren’t designed to be searchable and super organized.

They’re designed as a way for you to connect with your audience on a consistent basis and guide them to your BEST and most valuable content.

So, how do you solve this?

You probably already know what I’m going to say: BLOGS, BABY 👏🏼

When you have a blog that is optimized for a) new people that find you AND b) your current people, both of these groups are going to be able to easily find and consume your most valuable content and be confident in taking their next action with you - whether that be joining your email list, opting into your freebie, enrolling in your program, becoming a repeat customer, etc.

It's pretty simple: your blog serves as a home base that guides the REST of your content. 🏡

When you start with blogs FIRST, you can then pull small pieces for your social media content and use those small posts to guide your audience to your longer form blogs that are packed full of the value that someone might need to make that next move.

And what you’ll likely find is that your social posts feel much more natural and less time consuming to create because you know EXACTLY what you want to convey.

Here’s what this might look like in action: let’s say a year down the road someone finds you on Instagram and DM’s you a question about a specific topic in your niche.

And let’s say that you wrote a blog post on this exact topic months ago.

You can then answer their question publicly through a small piece of high level content that then directs them to your blog post that dives deep into the evergreen topic.

After that, you might follow up with a call to action (CTA) that continues to guide them through working with or purchasing from you.

Overall, when you start creating blog content on a consistent basis, you will soon have a content bank that is FILLED with organized and searchable content that you can refer to for years to come.

So, whether you already have an existing blog or you’re thinking about starting one, think about it in terms of optimizing for your PEOPLE, not a search engine.
