Bored With Your Blogging? Here’s Why (And How To Fix It)

When I decided I was going to niche my services down to blog writing, I had to come to terms with the fact that a lot of people out there unfortunately think that blogs are… BORING.

Or worse, some think that blogs are dead.

I don’t have time to go into my whole spiel on that in this blog post, but if you want to hear me talk more about how blogs aren’t dead, they’ve simply evolved, you can click here!

While I can’t wrap my head around why anyone would think blogs are dead, I CAN understand why some people think blogs are boring to write and maybe even to read.

Blogs aren’t shiny like social media – there aren’t any likes or comments to give you instant gratification.

And a lot of people think that blogs have to be formal and professional – since they’re intended to educate your audience, you probably have to change your voice and tone right?

WRONG!

The hill I’ll die on is that blogs aren’t boring, you’re just going about them the wrong way.

I don’t care what you sell, who your audience is, or what industry you’re in, if you’re creating content to market your business, blogs belong in your strategy.

And they absolutely don’t have to be a snoozefest. 😴

But they WILL be if you do these 7 things…

7 Reasons Why Your Business Blogs Are Boring You (and Your Audience)

You’re writing only for SEO purposes

If I had to pick one thing that makes me different from other blog writers and strategists out there, it’s that I believe you should be blogging in your business for wayyyyy more than just the SEO benefits

Now, don’t hear what I’m NOT saying. Yes, SEO is important and yes, you should conduct some keyword research when writing your blogs.

But if you’re ONLY writing blog topics based on that research, then yeah, you’re gonna be bored!

This is why I encourage creative business owners to write for their audience first and search engines second.

Here’s some questions to ask yourself to help you do this:

  • What is your audience ACTUALLY asking you? I’m talking in your comments, DMs, email replies, etc.

  • What do you know your audience specifically needs more of?

  • What are the misconceptions or myths they have about your industry or niche?

  • How can you help them shift their perspective?

Create topics around these things first and you’ll have yourself a happy medium of keyword inspired topics AND topics that your people truly want.

You’re changing your tone and writing style to look and sound more “professional” in your blogs.

Somewhere out there someone has probably made you think that in order for your blogs to be effective, you have to change the way you sound so that you come off as more "professional."

So naturally you’ve started to view blogs as the more “formal” content that you create… and SHOCKER, it feels boring to you!

The truth that I want you to remember is that your audience already loves you for you and they don't want a different version of you in your blog posts.

Sure, for blogs to be effective for SEO you might need to adjust your writing structure and format, but your voice? Heck no. Write it like you’d say it!

It’s seriously as simple as that.

You’re using the same blog formats every time you write.

Along the same lines of feeling like blogs need to be your "professional" content, there’s a chance that you’ve boxed yourself into the basic blog topics that you see everywhere.

“How To XYZ” or “___ Ways to XYZ”

While you might find that your audience does need topics like this from time to time, I’d encourage you to switch things up and use one of these 7 blog formats when you write your next blog post (and you better choose one that you wouldn’t typically choose!)

You’re regurgitating information that’s already out there instead of leaning into your unique POV.

Speaking of blog topics, if you’re choosing topics that you feel like you have to write, such as a “How To XYZ” or “___ Ways to XYZ” like mentioned above, there’s a good chance you’re going to start to feel like you’re simply regurgitating what’s already out there.

There are plenty of people who do what you do, but that doesn’t mean your content has to sound like theirs.

For example, let’s say you’re a copywriter and you want to educate your audience on how to write an effective About page. That’s great, love that! But that doesn’t automatically mean you have to take the basic approach of “5 Things To Include on Your Website About Page.”

That blog probably already exists ten times over. INSTEAD, you could use your unique experience to talk about the biggest mistakes you see on About pages or the top things to avoid on an About page.

This gives the topic a fun spin, allows you to bring your unique perspective to the conversation, AND makes it more exciting to write – all while still offering the education that your audience is looking for.

You’re letting AI do all the writing for you.

Do I really need to say more for this one?

Listen, I know AI can be helpful and I’m all for using it as a tool, but what I’m NOT here for is letting AI do the writing for you.

The moment you do that, your blog content becomes hella boring – sorry, it’s true!

You have to understand that AI bots are simply taking information that’s already out there and regurgitating it, which is the very thing I just mentioned above.

Not only will the content feel boring for you, but it will feel boring for your audience, too!

So instead of using AI to write your blog content, use it to help you where you struggle throughout the writing process.

For example, if you know what you’re trying to say, but you’re just struggling to get it out, brain dump your thoughts and ask it to help you concisely convey the message.

And then edit what it gives you so it actually sounds like you, PLZ!!!

You aren’t strategically planning your blog content.

The OG Natty Writes followers know that I’m your typical type A planner through and through. I loveeee creating a plan of any kind, so of course that overflows into my business, especially my blog content.

Now listen, I’m all for creating content when the ideas strike. But having a plan to work off of will be your saving grace when your idea bank is running dry.

The thing is, a lot of times business owners view blog content as just another thing on their to-do list that they need to check off each week – something that they need to do for SEO purposes.

But like I mentioned above, if you’re only blogging with SEO in mind, then yeah… it’s going to feel boring.

Instead, I want business owners to create a quarterly blog content plan that’s insanely strategic and this is exactly what I teach through my 4 Step Blog Content Creation Process

When you plan your blog content quarterly, you’re able to zoom out, look at a calendar for the next three months and align your blog content strategically and intentionally with what’s going on in the world AND in your business.

For example, if you’re launching a new course in September, you can ensure that you have pre-launch blog content planned that prepares your audience for what’s to come.

Additionally, you can look ahead and ensure that your content aligns with important events, holidays or industry trends that keeps you timely and relevant in the eyes of your audience and maximizes your engagement.

And hear me when I say: a blog content plan isn’t meant to be something that you never stray from. You’re allowed to move topics around as needed. The main point is that your quarterly blog content calendar moves you out of thinking mode and into DOING.

You’re writing within the same blog pillar all the time.

Lastly, if your blogs have been feeling a bit boring, then it might be because you’ve unintentionally boxed yourself into the same one or two blog pillars and you’re tired of creating content around those things.

Your blog content pillars are foundational topics or themes that your blog’s content strategy is built around. They represent the main categories or key areas that your blog covers and give you an easy way to organize and structure your content, so that your audience can easily find what they need at any given time!

I typically encourage people to have 5-8 blog content pillars that encompass overarching themes or categories that relate to your business overall.

For example, a copywriter’s overarching list might include:

  • Messaging

  • Marketing

  • Copywriting Tips

  • SEO

  • Content Marketing

  • Blogging

  • Email Marketing

  • Freelancing

  • Websites

  • Social Media

These are all very broad topics that they likely have a lot of knowledge around, but to ensure that each of these remain true to their ideal audience and brand strategy, they’ll want to narrow down this list and create blog pillars that directly relate to the type of services they offer or expertise they want their brand to be known for.

For example, if the copywriter doesn’t offer blogging services, that can be a sign they don’t really need to include that as a main content pillar. Now, that doesn’t mean they can’t ever write a blog that has to do with blogging, but it simply doesn’t make sense for that to be a core pillar.

Their final blog pillar list might look like:

  • Copywriting Tips

  • Websites

  • SEO

  • Marketing

Having defined pillars like this not only keeps blog content on your website organized and categorized, but it also gives YOU a chance to diversify your content and switch up what you’re writing about.
